Electrostatic Dissipation

To protect your EDT product from electrostatic discharge (ESD), EDT provides an ESD-safe kit containing a wrist strap, aluminum tape, and bubble bag. Use these three items as outlined below.

NOTE: To further reduce the risk of static damage, remove unneeded packaging from your workspace after each step.

  1. Shut down and power off your computer, but do not unplug it; an unplugged system is not grounded.
  2. Remove non-grounded items (e.g., paper, plastic, fabric, etc.) from your workspace.
  3. Open the external, but not the internal, packaging of your EDT product and save needed items (ESD-safe kit, installation CD, etc.); remove the external packaging from your workspace.
  4. Arrange the ESD-safe wrist strap as follows…
    a. Open the plastic wrapper and remove it from your workspace.
    b. At the copper end: Peel off the paper backing and remove it from your workspace; then attach the copper to the non-painted metal underside of your computer chassis.
    c. At the black tape end: Peel back the strap to expose the tape; then wrap the strap twice around your wrist, with the tape touching your skin.
  5. Arrange the ESD-safe aluminum tape and bubble bag as follows…
    a. Peel off the tape’s paper backing and remove it from your workspace.
    b. Attach one end of the tape to the bubble bag, and the other end to the non-painted metal underside of your computer chassis.
  6. To be sure you and your environment are grounded, verify that your finished ESD-safe setup looks like this…

  7. Now open your EDT product’s internal packaging and remove it from your workspace.
  8. Install your EDT product, ensuring that it does not touch any non-grounded items.
